Fix Error 1904 [2] failed to register, when installing QuickBooks
When installing QuickBooks files, a user can face QuickBooks Error 1904 which arises when the system and files are not maintained instantly. This error shows ‘Failed to register’ file path/name/extension.
“Error 1904: [file path/name /extension] failed to register”
This QuickBooks error 1904 can also occur when QuickBooks Desktop installation after upgrading the operating system such as Windows Vista to Windows 7. If you find that there are multiple QB Errors, then this can be caused by Microsoft Visual C++ damaged components.
Causes of QuickBooks Error 1904:
- Company file is damaged or corrupted may be due to file settings.

Steps to fix QuickBooks Error 1904 when you install QuickBooks Desktop:
Solution 1: Run QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool
- Select Ignore on the error message and let the installation complete. Do not open QB software.
- Restart the system.
- If QB installation is not complete, then download and run QuickBooks Desktop Install Diagnostic Tool
- Reboot the system.
- If you find that running the tool is unable to fix the error, then activate the built-in administrator and install QB software under the built-in administrator account.
Solution 2: Activate built-in or hidden administrator
Here are the steps to activate built-in or hidden administrator:
Step 1: Activate the built-in administrator
- Tap the Windows button on the keyboard.
- Type cmd and right click on the “CMD/Command Prompt/cmd.exe” and choose ‘Run as Administrator’.
- In this window, enter the ‘net user administrator/active:yes’ and click Enter.
Step 2: Switch to the built-in administrator account
- Press ‘Ctrl+Alt+Del’ on the keyboard simultaneously and choose “Switch the User Windows 8 Users”. Click on the Windows button and choose the user icon on the upper right of the display.
- Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete together and choose ‘default Administrator account’ icon.
Step 3: Hide the built-in administrator Account
- Click the Windows button on the keyboard. Type cmd in the search box and right click on the “CMD/Command Prompt/cmd.exe” and choose ‘Run as Administrator’.
- In this window, enter the ‘net user administrator/active:no’ and click Enter.
Step 4: Change security settings of installation directory
- Browse ‘C:\Program Files\Common Files’
- Right click on ‘Common Files’ and choose the Properties tab.
- Select ‘Edit’ icon and under ‘Security’ tab, and choose Users under Group or user-names icon.
- Under ‘Permissions for users’ tab, choose the following:
- Modify
- Read and Execute
- List folder contents
- Read
- Write
- Choose Apply and click OK.
Step 5: Install QuickBooks
- Install QuickBooks desktop again.
- After installation, switch to original user log in.
Points to Remember:
- If you work only with QB Database Manager, then the solutions given will not work for you. For this, you will be required to install actual exe.
- This error usually occurs in Microsoft Windows when a user is not running it as Administrator.
- Before you install Avalara Avatax, ensure that exe has been installed on the server.
- When you try to install the connector on a Server without the installation of QB exe, then this error can occur.
- Click OK on the error, and ensure that installation is completed successfully.
- Go to AvaTax configuration.
- Run QuickBooks as Administrator.
- Select ‘Test Connection’ option.
